Here's an F-Type before I jump into my rant.

Kinja'd!!!

So I told my dad that the Datsun was sold, and the first thing he says is "I wasn't going to let you buy it anyways." Thanks a fucking bunch, Pops. He goes on to say that he won't let me buy any project car, no matter the price, until I've gotten experience working on cars. Wait a fucking second. He won't let me buy a car to tinker on until I've tinkered on cars? HOW THE FUCK DOES THAT WORK?

It's funny, because I was hoping that I might be able to help out at a family friend's garage this summer, and learn the skills and tricks of the trade. Nope. My parents send me to fucking New Jersey (no offense to any Opponauts in Jersey) to study for the SAT. FUCKING ASIAN PARENTS.

My dad is also worried that I would've had to spend some cash on tools. They last for a very long time, dickhead. Even if I don't use them this very second, they'll still be around long after I'm dead. It's a one-time purchase. Anyways, it's my fucking money! Why should he give a shit how I'm spending it? As long as I'm not blowing my cash on cocaine and/or hookers, who cares? (Disclaimer- I obviously do not condone drug use or prostitution.) He doesn't understand that cars are my passion. Well, he does, but he thinks that it's all a waste of time, money, and effort. Thanks, dad.

TL;DR- Fuck you dad. Thanks for raising me, but I'm almost 18. Let me live my life.

Does my dad's logic make any sense to you guys? Or am I being a thoughtless ass?

Hey, NJ isn't all that bad. We've got diners, and more italian food than italy. New York on the other hand....

Hey, think of it this way, my dad doesn't actually believe I work on cars. Granted, he isn't usually home when I do, but whatever.

It does get better though, don't rush through this part of life because you will miss it. More than you think.

The one "point" your dad could be making is the following - do you currently maintain your own car? If you don't, start there. ANd if they spend moer than 20$ on holiday or birthday gifts, ask for a basic tool set. Sears has any number of sets form 50-150 that are GREAT for a beginner. My dad got me one on a half off day, I think it was 80$ on sale and I have well over 150 pieces AND a carrying case.

ANd here's a good way to call your dad on his bluff - offer to change the family car's oil and do maintenance checks if it's out of warranty. Look up common problems for the car and offer to take a look and see what's going on. If you can't even change the oil........well.........you dad would have a point in THAT case, but I don't think that's what's happening here.

Summary - don't rebel, fight it under your dad's rules. Gain experience on your own car to "save money" and ask for tools as gifts.

That's okay, if you weren't we'd have to re-evaluate many things.

In the end, you're preparing to head off to college, and you will have a lot of time during college summer breaks and whatnot.

Besides, you can always just go nuts and just say you're going to do an oil change in the driveway, so you hope the car can drive afterwards. Just like nudge life into a situation where it's in your favor. It'll be fine, I'm sure.

(don't actually do that).

Wrong attitude to have - what about the interior? Install new speakers or head unit? Fix some interior rattles? Dynamat the door panels? Shine up the headlights to remove the haze? Buff the paint? Install new sway bar bushings? Replace the brake pads and rotors? Wheel speed sensors?

My dad is the same way. The past two summers I have worked engineering internships and made a buttload of money. Each time being told I could buy a car. Every car I found there was some reason I couldn't buy it. Dad didn't want to add another car to the insurance, so I told him my mom would put it on her insurance. Then I couldn't buy because it didn't have an airbag. So I found a car with an airbag. Then I couldn't buy because it was too fast (in this case it was a 1990 325is, mind you), I told him it was slower than my 99 Camry V6 and then I couldn't buy it because it would break down every day and oil changes would cost 200 bucks (wtf?!??). Then I was told I should save the money for a down payment on a house after I graduate in December. WTF HOW WILL I GET TO WORK WITHOUT A CAR??? After all, the Camry will go to my brother when I graduate. Eventually I defeated every excuse he could come up with for over a year and a half of trying so many different cars and he finally admitted after this summer that he never, ever intended to let me buy a car. He's fucking insane. So I'm forced to sit on a buttload of cash and watch my friends enjoy their fun cars (particularly my friend who graduated in May and is buying a Cayman S this week...). The only good news is my old man does pay for all of my expenses (tuition, books, food, rent, utilities, everything) but that doesn't excuse him from being unreasonable to an unbelievable level. And I only have 3 more months until I can buy whatever car I want. And the first thing I plan to do is get a non-airbag steering wheel just for spite. (Also E36 M3 doesn't have tilt/telescoping wheel and I have ultra long legs and slightly short arms so I need the wheel to come closer lol)

Don't say you're doing it to practice. just say you want a nicer car but don't want to pay someone to do the work. Or do things like the basic maintenance yourself. There is so much more than engine work that needs to be done on any car. THe mods I talked about are cheap too. Look on ebay for slightly used speaker and a better amp/head unit. I got an entire 4 speaker + sub + amp + head unit setup for 400$ and I exclusively sourced BLAUPUNKT items. Go a little cheaper or just be less picky and be slightly more realistic and you could do head unit + speakers for about 200 including wires and everything else.

I would definitely have to get the speakers approved by him, because that may or may not make the car harder to sell.

Don't get anything too extreme. Like don't get a subwoofer box and whatnot. Go for speakers that can fit inside the stock openings so you don't have to do cutting and splicing and anything like that. If anything, it will be a feature to have better sound system. Oh and avoid the crazy looking cheesy head units. Stay simple and classy.

Studying for the SATs is really damn important. They, your AP/IB scores, your community involvement (which could include cars), and your GPA will get you the sort of life that will give you all kinds of awesome rides. Simultaneously you having practical knowledge of how to work on cars is a practical thing that will be useful all your life. Purchasing a fine set of tools is a responsible action for your future.

Point out that such things, along with all the test/school stuff, could send you towards a future in automotive/mechanical engineering, which is a future that would make you quite well off and make most stereotypical authoritarian parents very happy. They could brag about you.

Pull it off right and you might get tools/a project car, if not the time at the garage to learn the skills. You're going to have to go to SAT camp either way.

As far as that goes, the real secret to upping your verbal SAT score is reading all the time, whether you like it or not. All the math tutoring stuff helps though.

just install the speakers behind the factory grills and use the factory wiring.

If you install a head-unit get DIN to Toyota harness adapters. Keep original head-unit for sale. (unlike the previous owner for my car who ran his own speaker wiring and soldered like a preschooler)

tinkering on a car =\= project car.
tinkering on a car is changing oil, swapping brake pads, air filters, batteries, etc etc.
a project car is NOT that. project cars are replacing transmissions and motors, full brake systems and so on

if you already have a daily that is NOT your parents, then yea, your dads in the wrong. maybe he doesnt want an onld car taking up space. if you DONT have a daily that doesnt belong to them, then your dads right. sorry champ

the tool thing however: wrong and right. I am 20, and already have a fair amount of tools that I use on a (relatively) consistent basis. BUT. I dont buy tools I dont need. If you dont need them, why buy them?

also: "almost 18, let me live" really man? I get where your coming from, i was in that too, but really?

Also: you are startying to get closer to university/college. listen to me. put cars out of your mind. read about them, but unless its a reliable daily, dont buy them. you will invest FAR too much time and money into it, wont invest enough in school, and will ruin your life in the future. yea its hard., no one ever said it was easy. but after that, you can go and buy 4 datsuns and use them to leave big, smokey bunrouts infront of your dads house. so you get the last laugh.

TL:DR. Your dad is kinda right....

I can tell you this. Being 40 and having lived through the whole 18-40 phase of wanting a project awesome car and knowing i can afford it the whole time, in retrospect, I can safely say, that I could indeed NOT afford it and NOT maintain it and NOT have the three cardinal things that all projects need.

1 Space-if you do not have the space for this thing at ANY time, then it becomes nearly impossible to have and keep unless it is your reliable daily driver.

2 Time-if you do not have time to work on it, it can become, in your mind, a burden and in your family's mind a burden to them especially iff there is a lack of #1 (space).

3 Money-you may have the money now, but you will not when you ahve your own place to live in. rent. what space will you have to put this car in? that costs more money. money that comes out of the money to work on this thing and keep it running. a rolling running project car that is your daily driver will hardly ever get finished. it becomes impossible to do a full restore when you have to drive to work.

It was impossible because of the wrenches life throws you in progress. Example, your college degree is freshly printed out and you're ready to go. the best and bad ass job for you is...1500 miles away. Are you going to take that non running project car with you? how? where will you put it? your first thing is an apartment where you go until you find your own place, of course that's assuming the next job isn't another thousand miles away. this happens frequently to people and jobs. If i had a project car or a race car on a trailer, i would have had to tow it suddenly 1500 miles across the country due to sudden job change. after doing that move, adding a car on trailer would have been horrendous, especially since i had very little money.

if you seriously want this badly. do something that I wish i did. Turn 18. move out if you can afford it on your own dime. get a good pair of bicycles for commuting to work and riding for fitness, and spend your money on the car and the space to keep the car.

im not siding with your parents, but look ahead 5 years. what changes in your life are about to happen? add a project car that may or may not be running by then and taking up money. College for me seemed like a very long 5 years. it was in fact such a brief moment in time with 4 address changes and extreme melodrama amongst beer induced emotional friends. Im just putting reality out there.

Edit: Jokes aside, I've had a lot of instances where my parents have made stubborn decisions about my life that made little to no sense. Like a lot of oppos said - start small. Buy few cheap tools and offering to maintain the family cars and try to win him over. After you graduate from school and move out, get something reliable and maintain it. Then start tinkering on it....Don't get a total rust bucket project car first. You don't want to bite off more than you can chew.
